Associate Dean Robert Goldstein is the Haas Distinguished Professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Kansas.  He has been on the faculty of the Department of Geology at the University of Kansas since 1985. He received the BS in 1979 from Juniata College and received the MS in 1981 and Ph.D. in 1986, both from the University of Wisconsin.

His research is focused on carbonate rocks, the group of sedimentary rocks composed of the minerals calcite and dolomite, and containing more than half of the world’s oil. His research program integrates large-scale fieldwork in various areas around the world and microscopic and geochemical analyses of mineral precipitates in pore systems of rocks. In particular, Dean Goldstein has pioneered the fluid inclusion technique for determining the pressure, temperature, and fluid chemistry of mineral precipitation. His research addresses fundamental scientific questions as well as research that directly applies to oil and gas exploration.
